This Sunday's match will be "Long Reining Demonstration" Featuring "Favorito" de Negrito, a Lusitano stallion trained to the highest level of classical horsemanship, owned by Charlie and Pat Cook.
The Lusitano Horse, known as the Spanish Andalusian or the Portuguese Lusitano, the Iberic horse is one of the oldest pure breeds in the world today. Their bravery and agility has been recorded in the bullring, on the battlefield, and in ceremony. Highly prized by nobility for their extravagant movements, the Iberic horse has been depicted in historical paintings and sculptures throughout the centuries. This breed has contributed to the bloodlines of many modern breeds including the famous Lipizzaner of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
The Classical Art of Long Reining
Long reining is the art of presenting the classical movements of dressage by which the handler is communicating with the horse from the ground. The handler works the "long reins" from his position directly behind the haunches. Only highly talented horses can be trained to perform the exercises on the long rein to full perfection. They are able to understand fully the directions from the handler, given exclusively by means of the reins. While not commonly seen at today's equestrian venues, the art of long reining continues to be taught and performed at the relatively few remaining classical equestrian schools in the world. The weather forecast is for a wonderful dy so please plan to attend. Because this is the last '09 match, attendance will be high and if you are not a regular member, and wish to attend, please e-mail you reservation request to help insure your space to (GEMENI423@CS.COM) Thank You, Your Colts Neck Polo Committee
